A-movie-A-night - was a project for Braziers International Artist Workshop, Braziers Park, Oxfordshire in August 2000

Getting away from London is paradoxically an essential survival technique for living in London. My car however, rammed full of equipment might of seemed incongruous to the idea of fleeing my life in London but this was actually my elaborate response to escape my habitual studio practice of painting. In anticipation of finding another footing from which to situate my practice, I had not brought a paintbrush.

I quickly installed my various technological toys in a former pottery, and began to play. Sounds were sampled, spiders filmed, small lights set to flash and speech manipultaed to phase.

For a week the freedom of play led in all kinds of refreshing directions but most importantly led to the realisation that some form of structure had to be imposed to avoid leaving the workshop with lots of beginnings, that may have not survived the short but painful journey back to London.

In the second week, given the generous environment of the workshop I put up a poster and distributed flyers with the promise of A-movie-A-night. This committed me to the shooting and production of a video piece everyday. The short films were screened in the music room in the main house at the same time every evening after dinner for one working week (Monday to Friday). There was no obligation to attend but everyone was welcome.
